Content, playlists and schedules

Upload media, build playlists and multi-zone layouts, add widgets, and schedule what plays where and when.

Media

Go to Media and drop files anywhere on the page. Vistapane makes thumbnails for you.

Uploads can be up to 4 GB each by default. The limit is MAX_UPLOAD_MB in server.ini.

Widgets

Widgets are made in Media too, and they update themselves.

  • Announcement / text slide: a big headline and details, with a background image and an accent color.
  • Date & time: a digital or analog clock in the time zone you choose.
  • Weather: current conditions and a 5-day forecast for a city or ZIP code.
  • Countdown / days since: count down to a date, or count the days since one, like a safety counter.
  • RSS news: headlines from any RSS or Atom feed.

Weather and RSS need internet access on the server, not on the displays.

Playlists

A playlist plays items in order, then loops. In Playlists you can drag items to reorder them, set how long each one shows, turn items off without deleting them, shuffle, and pick a transition: crossfade, slide, zoom or cut. The live preview shows the result as you edit.

Layouts

A layout splits a screen into zones that each play their own content, for example a main zone, a sidebar with the clock and weather, and a scrolling ticker along the bottom.

  • Start from a ready-made layout: main and sidebar with ticker, split, a 4-up grid or a header strip.
  • Or make your own in Layouts → Templates: drag and resize zones on a landscape or portrait screen, snap them to a grid and to each other, split zones and add a ticker.
  • The ticker can show live RSS headlines.

Schedules

Without schedules, each screen shows its default content. Add schedules in Schedules for things like a breakfast menu from 6 to 10 am, or a Friday safety meeting slide.

  • Choose the days of the week, the times, and optionally a start and end date.
  • Times can cross midnight, for example 22:00 to 06:00.
  • Target all screens, groups or single screens.
  • When schedules overlap, the one with the highest priority wins.
  • Week at a glance shows the next 7 days, so you can check what plays when.

What a screen plays, in order

A screen shows the first of these that applies:

  1. An active emergency alert
  2. A push that hasn't ended
  3. The highest-priority schedule that's on now
  4. The screen's own default content
  5. Its group's default content
  6. The default content in Settings → General

Outside its operating hours, a screen goes black unless an alert is active.

Proof of play

The proof-of-play page shows play counts and screen time for every item and every screen, for up to 90 days. You can shorten how long it's kept under Settings → Data retention.
