Install the server
Install Vistapane Server on a Windows PC with one file. It runs as a Windows service and starts with the PC.
VistapaneServer.exe is the whole server in one file, about 35 MB. Node.js, the admin, the display player and the player downloads are all inside it.
Install
- Copy
VistapaneServer.exeto the PC that will be the server and double-click it. - Windows asks for permission to make changes. Click Yes. You need to be an administrator on the PC.
- Click Install.
- When it finishes, it shows the addresses for the admin, the display player and screen sharing, for example:
Admin dashboard : http://vistapane-server:8080/admin/
Display player : http://vistapane-server:8080/player/
Screen share : https://vistapane-server:8443/share/Open the admin address to sign in for the first time.
What the installer sets up
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| The program | C:\Program Files\Vistapane Server |
| Settings, media, license and certificate | C:\ProgramData\Vistapane\data |
| Server log | C:\ProgramData\Vistapane\logs\server.log |
| Port settings | C:\ProgramData\Vistapane\server.ini |
| Windows service | Vistapane Server, starts automatically and restarts itself if it stops |
| Firewall | A Windows Firewall rule that lets screens and laptops reach the server |
| Shortcuts | Vistapane admin in the Start menu and on the desktop |
| Taskbar icon | The Vistapane icon, which starts when anyone signs in |
The data folder can only be opened by administrators and the service, because it holds password hashes, the license and the HTTPS certificate.
The taskbar icon
Right-click the Vistapane icon in the taskbar to:
- open the admin, or copy its address
- Restart server
- Reset admin password, if you're locked out (see Sign-in and security)
- Show server log
It also shows whether the server is Running. Restarting the server and resetting the password ask for administrator permission.
Update to a newer version
Run the newer VistapaneServer.exe and click Update. Settings, media and the license stay as they are, and screens reconnect by themselves. See Backups and updates.
Move from an older folder install
If you ran Vistapane from a folder with start-server.bat before:
- Close the
start-server.batwindow first, so the port is free. - Run
VistapaneServer.exe. If you run it from inside the old folder, it offers to copy the settings, media and license across. Otherwise choose Copy settings and media from an older Vistapane folder and pick the folder. - Click Install. It also removes the old "start automatically" scheduled task.
The license moves with the data, so you don't need to activate it again.
Change the ports
Edit C:\ProgramData\Vistapane\server.ini as an administrator, then choose Restart server from the taskbar icon. The settings are PORT, HTTPS_PORT, STUN_PORT and MAX_UPLOAD_MB. See Reference.
If you change PORT, update the address on display PCs too (on each one, press Ctrl+Shift+S in Vistapane Player).
Install without the windows
For RMM tools, Intune or Group Policy, run it from an administrator command prompt:
VistapaneServer.exe --install --quiet| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
--install --quiet | Install, or update, with no windows |
--no-firewall | Don't add the firewall rule |
--no-tray | Don't start the taskbar icon at sign-in |
--import-data <folder> | Copy settings and media from an older Vistapane folder |
--uninstall --quiet | Remove it and keep the data |
--remove-data | With --uninstall, also delete the data |
Uninstall
Go to Windows Settings → Apps → Vistapane Server → Uninstall, or run VistapaneServer.exe again and click Uninstall. Your settings and media are kept unless you tick the box to delete them.
